Mercedes contract talks with Valtteri Bottas have yet to begin, as George Russell waits in the wings.

Valtteri Bottas says that negotiations about his future with Mercedes beyond 2021 have yet to begin.

Valtteri Bottas has acknowledged he has yet to commence contract talks with Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton regarding his future with the team, as contract talks for the seven-time champions begin.

Hamilton and Bottas are both out of contract at the conclusion of the season, and while Hamilton appears to be likely to stay at Mercedes for at least another year, Bottas appears to be stuck in limbo, with George Russell lurking in the wings.

And the Finn’s performance this season hasn’t helped matters, as he’s off to his worst start as a Mercedes driver, sitting fifth in the standings, 72 points behind championship leader Max Verstappen.

Bottas said at the start of the month that contract talks would begin in the ‘next month or so,’ amid much speculation over Mercedes’ 2022 lineup.

Russell, however, has been extensively linked with a Mercedes seat after performing when deputizing for Hamilton last season and with his three-year agreement with Williams coming to an end at the end of the season.

Bottas, on the other hand, is adamant that his slow start has nothing to do with any prospective contract problems, and that everything at Mercedes are now running smoothly.

“First and foremost, as many of you are aware, this is not a new scenario for me. Bottas stated ahead of the first of two races in Austria, “I’ve been in this exact situation many times, every year, when I’ve been waiting for my future to be clear.”

“It’s the same circumstance as before, and it’s nothing out of the ordinary for me.

“Everyone understands how this sport works; if you produce results, you will earn your rightful spot.

“If you don’t get results, if the team thinks you need to change the driver, you replace the driver; it’s that simple in this sport, and I’m just going back, but there are 16 races left.”

“The team understands what I’m capable of, and they know how important I’ve been in recent years in terms of winning the championship, and so on.

“Those discussions aren’t appropriate at this moment; we’re in the middle of a triple header, with two races in two weeks, and that’s the priority right now.

“I’m confident we will in the off weeks.” Brinkwire Summary News”.
