Mercedes-Benz provides a “clear indicator.” Russell will race with Lewis Hamilton next year, according to Schumacher.
Ralf Schumacher says Mercedes has revealed who will be Lewis Hamilton’s teammate in 2022.
With George Russell joining the team for testing in Hungary, Ralf Schumacher believes Mercedes has given a clear indication of who will partner Lewis Hamilton next season.
Russell continued with the team following the Hungarian Grand Prix to participate in more thorough Pirelli tyre tests in preparation for the major changes in 2022, as well as gain valuable seat time with the current World Champions.
It’s a crucial test for Formula One teams, as the regulations will be overhauled for the 2022 season, bringing significant changes.
The 18-inch tyres, which are much larger than the current specification, will be one of several major modifications for next season.
At the Hungaroring, the current Mercedes junior driver covered over two race miles, fueling rumors that the Briton will replace current Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas next year.
With much conjecture in the paddock, 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve threw a spanner in the works, claiming that Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll may be a front-runner.
“In my opinion, [Bottas] should join Aston Martin rather than Lance Stroll, who will join Mercedes. Stroll senior’s [Lawrence Stroll, owner of Aston Martin’s Formula One team] desire is to see his son win championships,” Villeneuve stated in an interview with Libero Quotidiano in Italy.
“He [Lawrence] is close to Toto Wolff, and Toto is looking for a spot for Valtteri. Russell is the last person Hamilton wants on his team.
“Having someone like Bottas who won’t annoy him is preferable.”
Schumacher, on the other hand, discounted Villeneuve’s notion, believing it to be a relatively straightforward riddle for Mercedes to solve.
“It’s true that [Lawrence] Stroll and [Stephen] Wolff are good friends. But how far would they be willing to go? In an interview with Autobild, Schumacher claimed, “I don’t think Lance Stroll plays a role at Mercedes.”
“I believe Russell has sat in that position [Mercedes], and it is no coincidence that he is driving the Mercedes tests with the new 18-inch tires that will be utilized next year.
“This is a clear indication for me.”
Bottas and Russell are both free agents at the conclusion of the season, and Wolff admits it’s a clear fight for the starting spot between the two.
Nonetheless, Schumacher believes Wolff will not abandon Bottas in 2022.
