Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount was nominated for the Ballon d’Or.
Chelsea and England midfielder Mason Mount has quipped that you “never know” when asked about his chances of beating the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar to the Ballon d’Or. Mount was included on a star-studded list of nominees to win the award.
The 22-year-old has had an excellent year at both club and international level.
Mount provided the assist for Kai Havertz to score the only goal in the Champions League final. Chelsea defeated Manchester City in May’s European showdown.
The Champions League trophy was the first Mount has won in his career.
The Blues academy graduate was then a key member of the England squad which reached the final of Euro 2020. He did not score in the tournament but played an important role in midfield.
Mount has continued to perform well in the Premier League under Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, shaking his reputation as simply a favourite of former head coach Frank Lampard.
To be nominated for the Ballon d’Or, awarded to the best player in the world, is ‘special, Mount has said.
“It was special, I probably found out at the same time as everyone else,” Mount said ahead of England’s World Cup qualifier against Hungary at Wembley Stadium.
“To see that and to see the names, to be alongside them names it’s obviously a dream.
“For all of the years that you work hard, dedicate and see that it shows that everything pays off and it’s just the start it, it doesn’t stop now.”
Asked to rate his chances, Mount added: “I doubt it but you never know. The most important thing for me I continue to keep trying to hit the levels that I’ve set before and go even further that’s always been my mentality and hopefully that continues.”
Mount is joined on the nominees list by Chelsea team-mates N’Golo Kante and Jorginho. The latter was part of the Italy team who defeated England at Euro 2020.
England are hoping to go one better at next year’s World Cup. They can qualify for the tournament by beating Hungary tomorrow, but only if Poland also win against Albania.
The Three Lions thumped minnows Andorra 5-0 with a slightly understrength team on Saturday.
