Mark Webster, a former world darts champion, has been found to have a rare type of blood cancer.
In a comprehensive interview on Darts World’s YouTube channel this week, Webster, 42, who won the World Championship on the British Darts Organization (BDO) circuit in 2008, explained why he hasn’t worked at a darts event for Sky Sports since February.
Webster, a left-hander from Wales, was diagnosed in January with hairy cell leukaemia, a rare type of blood cancer that has not improved since he began chemotherapy in February. “It sounds bad when you say leukaemia, but…it’s got a good prognosis, 95% of cases are successful.” “My white blood counts are still not recovering, so therefore my immune system is not great at the moment, which is why I can’t go back to work,” Webster said. “I will be put into some sort of remission at some point, but just the recovery at the time is not going to plan in terms of the speed of it.”
Mark Webster, a pundit for Sky Sports Darts, has disclosed that he has a rare type of cancer.
The 42-year-old claims that while 95% of cases are successful, rehabilitation is “not going to plan.” “It’s not the worst case sort of scenario, but it’s just a bit frustrating for me.” “I can work with people just in sensible environments.” Really, it’s annoying. I’m accustomed to being busy, so the daily grind is a little annoying. My last job was in the Premier League on February 5 at Newcastle, so yes, I’m just getting by. I have to have faith in those who have been taking care of me. They’ve been excellent. “I got a bit carried away a few weeks ago thinking I might be able to come and work at Brighton, but my blood counts were too low,” she said. “I don’t always get the answers I want when I go in, but I have to trust them.”
“In myself, I feel fine and I would love to go back to work, but they don’t like the environment I work in,” said Sky Sports pundit Webster. “At the moment, it’s a case of doing as I’m told and being patient.” I like to be busy, so it’s annoying, but hopefully it won’t last too long.
