Manchester United have once again broken their silence over the alleged incident involving Harry Maguire after confirming that their club captain has pleaded not guilty to the charges facing him.
The 27-year-old was told he was free to return to England despite a hearing looming on Tuesday over his alleged role in attacking policemen while enjoying a night out with friends on the Greek island of Mykonos.
It was claimed that Maguire became embroiled in a brawl with rival supporters, who allegedly stabbed his sister in the arm during the heated melee, but United have insisted they will not be commenting further due to the ongoing legal proceedings.
A statement from the club read: ‘Following the appearance in court today we note the adjournment of the case to allow the legal team to consider the case file. Harry has pleaded not guilty to the charges. It would be inappropriate for the player or club to comment further while the legal process takes its course.’
Maguire had been questioned by a public prosecutor on the nearby island of Syros for almost two hours on Saturday morning, and did not comment over the reported attack when leaving court soon after.
His lawyer told Sky that the England international was a free man ‘right now’, having spent two nights in a jail cell after news of the incident surfaced on Friday morning.
After his appearance in court, Maguire was told he could return home and that his lawyers were instead free to represent him when the trial begins early next week.
A spokesman for the local police, Ioanna Rotziolou, has told MailOnline: ‘He is free to go back to England. He can be represented at Tuesday’s trial by an attorney.’
Maguire, who cost United £85million for his switch from Leicester last summer, was arrested in Mykonos on Thursday night along with two unnamed friends.
Legal sources allege that Maguire and his two friends have been charged with aggravated assault and verbal assault. The charge of attempting to bribe an officer is said to have been dropped, however.
The alleged incident took another twist when local media reports claimed that Maguire lashed out at the police officers after his younger sister, Daisy, was stabbed in the arm with a ‘sharp object’.
It has also been reported that five officers were needed to wrestle Maguire down as tensions flared out of control.
Two officers suffered facial injuries during the initial brawl after they were allegedly hurled to the ground, police say.
