Man United’s ideal Declan Rice replacement might be right in front of their eyes.

United are in need of a holding midfielder, and Declan Rice could be the answer.

Manchester United are in desperate need of a holding midfielder to round out their star-studded squad, but a clear alternative to long-term target Declan Rice could be precisely what they need to turn them into serious title challengers.

Manchester United have almost completed their team with the additions of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, and Cristiano Ronaldo, but they still lack a holding midfielder.

Declan Rice, who played alongside Kalvin Phillips during England’s Euro 2020 campaign, has emerged as a long-term target, and the same combination began England’s World Cup qualifier against Hungary on Thursday.

The pair were solid throughout the game, but England lacked creativity in the first half, which was resurrected after the break when Raheem Sterling put the visitors ahead after excellent play down the left channel from Jack Grealish and Mason Mount, and Sterling became the provider for England’s second when he crossed to Harry Kane, who headed past a helpless Peter Gulasci to double the lead.

Rice struck from distance after Grealish found the midfielder, and his effort wiggled under a porr Gulasci to round off a much stronger second period.

Rice has been linked with a number of clubs since his ascent through the ranks at West Ham, but United’s perfect midfielder might be his international teammate, who has also piqued United’s interest this summer.

Phillips was just named England’s player of the year for 2020/21, and it’s difficult to argue with him given his outstanding accomplishments during the previous season.

The 25-year-old has spent his whole professional career at Leeds United and has starred in the Premier League after helping his team achieve promotion from the Championship in the 2019/20 season.

Phillips has developed into a superb holding midfielder, and while he has a touch of bite, his consistency in gaining back ball and pressing his side forward is crucial for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. His interception set up Harry Kane’s chance to give England breathing space on the night.
