Manchester United are reportedly ready to make a £20million bid for Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff.
The 21-year-old only broke into the Newcastle first team this year but it’s claimed United have been impressed enough to make their move in the coming days.
According to The Times, United scouts have been tracking the deep-lying midfielder and made initial enquiries last week. Now they are ready to firm up that interest.
Newcastle insist the 21-year-old is not for sale. But that resolve is set to be tested.
Longstaff has been earmarked as a potential replacement for Ander Herrera and is viewed as a player who could emulate United coach and fellow Geordie Michael Carrick.
‘I can see that (the Carrick likeness),’ said Newcastle’s manager Rafa Benitez. ‘But, at this stage, Sean has more mobility and stamina. Certainly he has the technique and he can use both feet as well.’
