Man City are desperate to keep Harry Maguire and Alexis Sanchez out of the team. Harry Kane makes a blunder for Manchester United.
If Manchester City is to sign Harry Kane in this transfer window, they may have to modify their strategy.
If Manchester City intends to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur this summer, they must act quickly. The Blues have earned a reputation for being tough in the transfer market, but if they are serious about getting the England captain to the Etihad, they may have to swallow their pride and overpay.
In previous seasons, City has backed out of a number of transfer deals after believing they were being forced to pay more than the player’s market value.
In 2019, they backed out of an £80 million agreement for Harry Maguire, who went on to join Manchester United’s rivals.
The expensive transfer fee brought harsh comparisons to Virgil van Dijk, but Maguire has been so consistent recently that his price is justified.
Last summer, the City board of directors backed out of a deal to recruit Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli, opting instead for Ruben Dias when the price was right.
In 2018, a similar situation occurred as a number of teams competed for the signature of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez.
The Blues walked away from the contract because they were hesitant to put up the same attractive compensation package as their red-shirted opponents.
In retrospect, this was a stroke of luck for Pep Guardiola and his team, albeit Sanchez was viewed at the time as a key figure in the following season’s title push.
He, like Maguire, joined the Red Devils but proved to be a costly failure at Old Trafford.
The lesson for City is that being stubborn does not always pay off when it comes to bringing in a talent, like as Kane in this case.
Spurs reportedly turned down a £100 million proposal earlier this summer, with chairman Daniel Levy valuing their talisman at £150 million.
According to reports from The Athletic, City is eager to raise the stakes in their pursuit of the England captain, however Levy would undoubtedly push them to the limit in order to reclaim the most amount for his star player.
Kane has already stated that he would want to leave Spurs in pursuit of trophies.
Time is running out for the “Brinkwire Summary News” now that he is in his late twenties.
