Lyon sporting director Juninho has revealed that star midfielder Houssem Aouar could leave the French club this summer.
The 22-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest young midfielders in European football and is rated at around £44million by the Ligue 1 side.
Premier League duo Arsenal and Manchester City, along with Serie A champions Juventus, are reportedly keen on signing the midfielder this summer, with Juninho confirming that the young Frenchman’s departure is a possibility.
The Lyon chief told RMC Sport: ‘Houssem Aouar? When you have great players in the squad, it is quite logical that other bigger teams with greater economic power come to seek the players.
‘There is a risk of losing important players. If we lose important players, I have already spoken with the president, we will have the right to balance the workforce.’
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas took a different stance on Aouar’s future, stating that he will do everything he can to keep his star midfielder, who seemingly does not want to leave the club.
Aulas added: ‘Houssem has not said he wants to leave. We want to try to keep him even though the interest is considerable. There are no negotiations ongoing.’
The 5ft 9 inch midfielder was born in Lyon and came through the club’s youth ranks before breaking into the first-team in 2016.
Since then, the Frenchman has played 134 matches for the Ligue 1 side, scoring 24 goals.
Last season, the 22-year-old scored nine goals and registered eight assists in a French season that was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The midfielder played 91 minutes of his side’s 2-1 defeat to Juventus in last week’s Champions League last-16 second leg, which was enough to take his side through to the quarter-finals.
Aouar’s next match sees him take on his potential new employers in Manchester City, who Lyon face in the last-eight on Monday.
