Liverpool’s plans for Georginio Wijnaldum have been shattered following the target’s transfer decision.

Liverpool are anxious to replace Georgina Wijnaldum in midfield during the summer window.

After Denis Zakaria’s recent transfer decision, Liverpool’s plan to replace Wijnaldum has gone up in smoke.

The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder was the leading candidate to replace the Dutchman, who joined Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Zakaria’s contract will expire in the summer, and he will be a free agent.

Prior to the season, the Reds were interested in the Switzerland international and had scouted him for some time.

They were willing to wait until January instead of presenting a transfer bid for the midfielder.

That’s when they’ll be able to offer the 24-year-old a pre-contract deal, which, if accepted, would see him arrive for free at the end of the season.

It would have been the ideal strategy, especially given the fact that they lost Wijnaldum to PSG on a free transfer.

According to Sport, Zakaria is only interested in Barcelona and is waiting for an offer from them.

His determination is so strong that he has already turned down a contract offer from Gladbach, paving the route for his eventual departure.

Barca is in a financial bind after their most recent financial figures revealed they are nearly half a billion euros in debt.

After signing Eric Garcia, Sergio Aguero, and Memphis Depay for nothing last summer, they haven’t slowed down in the transfer market – particularly with free agents.

Zakaria’s signing would be a huge boost for the Nou Camp club, especially given the high level of interest in the former Young Boys star.

Liverpool aren’t the only ones interested in the midfielder; Manchester United and Tottenham are also said to be interested.

After losing Wijnaldum, a key member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad last season, a midfield is crucial to his objectives.

Only Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah have played more minutes in the Premier League than the 30-year-old.
