Lewis Hamilton discusses his private phone discussion with Max Verstappen and his dread of dying in an F1 disaster.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are two of Formula One’s best drivers.

Lewis Hamilton has opened up on his friendship with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and the Formula One season thus far. Both men are vying for the F1 Drivers’ Championship at the moment. And it’s been a long and winding campaign thus far.

Since Nico Rosberg’s retirement, Hamilton has been accustomed to cruising to victory.

But, with Verstappen putting up a strong fight so far, he’s had to dig deep to take pole position in the race for the trophy.

Things were on the verge of boiling over in July.

At the British Grand Prix, Hamilton and Verstappen collided, resulting in an outburst from Red Bull.

“I contacted him after Silverstone, but again, I don’t mean to be patronizing, but I am considerably older,” the Brit told ESPN. I’m a lot older, so calling and being able to break the ice was crucial for me.

“At 25, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve that.” I don’t have any animosity for him.

“What matters is that he does himself and learns, and all I have control over is what I do and how I deal with situations.”

“Whatever happens at the end of the year, we’ll shake hands and come back to battle again the following year.”

Hamilton also claims that he has avoided ‘certain scenarios’ with Verstappen in order to prevent a serious incident.

“Yes, I’ve had to pull out of certain instances with Max because otherwise we’d crash, and I’m just like, ‘I’ll defeat him another way,'” he admitted.

“I say to myself, ‘If I can just get out of this corner, I’ll challenge and fight him in a new way, staying close, using strategy, and doing all these various things.'”

But that comes with experience, and I sincerely hope that it pays off at the end of the year, but you must, of course, strike the appropriate balance.

“That’s exactly what I’m aiming for.”
