Fernando Alonso hailed Red Bull and Max Verstappen for putting an end to Mercedes’ “monotony.”
Fernando Alonso has hailed Red Bull and Max Verstappen for putting an end to Mercedes”monotony’ in Formula One, with Lewis Hamilton facing one of his toughest tests yet this season.
Mercedes’ domination in the hybrid era can be measured in numbers, with seven consecutive constructor titles and seven consecutive driver crowns, with Hamilton destroying record after record with the reigning world champions.
The British driver has been with Mercedes since 2013, and has since dominated the sport, winning seven world titles. Since 2014, he’s won six world titles with the Silver Arrows alone, and he’s now aiming for a record-breaking eighth.
However, the rankings have shifted this season, with Verstappen leading by 12 points going into Round 8 in Austria, and Red Bull stretching their legs at the top of the Constructors’ Championship by 37 points.
Alonso, a two-time world champion, returned to F1 this season after a two-year hiatus to compete in other competitions, and he says he enjoys the difference.
In an interview with AS, the Spaniard stated of the new rivalry, “It’s actually quite good.” After years of boredom for Mercedes, when it was just Hamilton vs Bottas until the middle of the year and then it was done, having two strong opponents is beneficial to the sport.
“It’s a little more stressful for them. It’s a little more fun for those who aren’t there.”
On Sunday, Alonso will start ninth on the grid for Alpine in Austria, continuing his slow but steady return to the championship.
Verstappen starts on pole, with Hamilton in second, both hoping to reclaim crucial points in the quest for the title.
When asked if Hamilton’s supremacy is over and if he’s no longer untouchable, the 39-year-old replied, “He was never unbeatable.” He used to have to beat his teammate, but now he has to battle another automobile that will be faster at times and slower at others.
“They’re both at the top of their game. Even when the Mercedes is a little bit better on a weekend, Verstappen does something unusual to stay in contention. And when Red Bull says, “Brinkwire Summary News,” you know you’re in for a treat.
