Jurgen Klopp issues a warning to Liverpool fans as the Reds’ manager admits to a Premier League transfer.
When it comes to the summer transfer window, the Reds have defied the norm in the Premier League.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has cautioned fans that they “must be prepared to take some knocks” coming season as they aim to keep up with their opponents. Liverpool defied the Premier League’s tendency by sticking to their guns rather than twisting in the summer transfer window, and Klopp is well aware that they will have stiff competition.
With barely three days left in the transfer window, Ibrahima Konate’s £36 million move from RB Leipzig remains the Reds’ sole major signing.
Following their well-documented injury troubles in central defense last season, Liverpool moved quickly to obtain Konate’s services.
Klopp has decided not to replace Gini Wijnaldum, who joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, with an outright replacement.
Instead, he has put his faith in the players already in his team to step up in Wijnaldum’s absence, which sets Liverpool apart from its opponents.
While Klopp believes Liverpool are in a solid position to challenge this season, he acknowledges that his opponents have strengthened their hands during the summer window.
“We know this league is the strongest league in the world, not just because the transfer window hasn’t even closed yet. “I don’t believe anyone doubts that,” he remarked.
“Being ambitious in this league means being prepared to take a few hits and a few punches here and there; all you have to do is get back up and keep going.
“If we can do that with the quality we have, the sole plan has always been that we will be able to beat the top teams in the world.
“We never considered ourselves to be the best team on the planet.
“Obviously, no one believes we are the best squad in the world right now. Good.
“But we still want to beat the top teams, and Chelsea won the Champions League, which is one of the most important tournaments in the world. Let’s see how it goes.”
The Premier League has been strengthened by the arrival of several great new players, yet Liverpool has only signed one.
Following the arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, Manchester United have added Cristiano Ronaldo to their roster.
Manchester City, the defending champions, have bought Jack Grealish from Aston Villa for a league-record £100 million, but they are still looking for a striker before the deadline.
