Jose Mourinho has already made his decision on Chelsea’s new partnership.
Jose Mourinho, the former Chelsea manager, has given his opinion on the club’s potential new alliance.
Chelsea are apparently interested in snatching Raphael Varane from Manchester United this summer, which might force them to use a new defensive combination next season. With only one year left on his contract, the Real Madrid defender is pondering leaving the Bernabeu.
Varane is reportedly expecting a raise in his £170,000-per-week salary, but Real are in financial problems and need to save money.
Sergio Ramos has already left for Paris Saint-Germain, and Varane may be the next player to leave.
United is in talks with the La Liga heavyweights about a summer transfer, but rumours in Spain suggest Chelsea is keeping a close eye on the situation as well.
As he nears the conclusion of his career, Thiago Silva, 36, is unlikely to play in every Premier League encounter.
As a result, Thomas Tuchel may put his faith in a younger Kurt Zouma to play alongside fellow Frenchman Varane.
After managing both of the kids at club level, Mourinho predicted that Zouma and Varane would become a formidable partnership six years ago.
During his second spell as Chelsea manager in 2015, Mourinho said, “I think the French Federation should send me a letter to thank me because I believe they now have the best two young center defenders in the world.”
“I’m not claiming to be the best because there are young, obviously end products, older players 24, 25, 28, 30, and so on.
“However, as young defenders, consider what Varane and Zouma could mean in football in a few years.
“I believe Didier [Deschamps] is quite pleased with that.”
Meanwhile, former Liverpool star Steve Nicol has doubts about Varane’s ability to compete in the Premier League.
“I think the most concerning aspect is that Varane is coming off a season in which he made a number of high-profile errors,” he said.
“You wonder whether last season is an indication that he’s starting to sag a little bit? That would be my main concern.
“It’ll be a large sum of money. It could be a waste of money for someone who, for his age, is already on his way out.”
Varane would join Chelsea with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, so there would almost certainly be exits if he arrived at Stamford Bridge.
