John Fury, Tyson Fury’s father, warns against a trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder, saying, “It’s a mistake.”
The father of the WBC heavyweight champion asked him to give up the championship in order to challenge Anthony Joshua.
Tyson Fury’s father has slammed his son for opting out of an all-British heavyweight title fight in order to fight Deontay Wilder in a WBC-ordered trilogy match.
While John Fury was in Las Vegas negotiating a fight contract to fight Wilder for the third bout, his father was back home in Withenshaw in disbelief at how things had changed.
In a honest interview with BT Sport, he said, “While I’m alive and well and able, I want to do the best I can for Tommy and Tyson.”
“However, Tyson is clearly in a different league now. There were 20,000 ‘yes men’ gathered around him.
“When you reach the pinnacle, this is what occurs. There are a lot of leeches and hangers-on out there.
“You can see what’s going on in America through him. To be honest, it’s dreadful labor.
“That’s simply my point of view. But I’m a straight shooter. That’s Tyson’s business; he’s over the age of 21. It’s entirely up to him.”
Fury Sr. went on to say that he was dissatisfied with the way his son’s business had been handled in recent weeks, after an arbitration court determined that Wilder was owed a third fight with WBC champion Fury under contract.
And, with the WBC mandating the fight as a result of the decision, failing to comply would almost certainly have resulted in the loss of his WBC world title.
But “Big John” stated the events that led to Tyson signing on for a third fight and then walking away from what could have been the biggest heavyweight title fight in history left him cold.
“Isn’t it diabolical?” says the narrator. he stated
“You’re ready to fight one man and then, at the eleventh hour, it’s all worked out in 24 hours.
“He’s signing contracts in a boxing gym’s lobby. Like locusts, they’re swarming around him.
“How can you think straight with all that around you?” I wonder.
“It’s a mistake in my opinion. He made a mistake, but can’t he blame his team? There’s no one else.”
Fury Srmain .’s concern was the seeming speed with which everything happened. “Brinkwire News in Condensed Form.”
