Vincent Kompany has urged Lionel Messi to join Manchester City, saying that such a transfer would be ‘incredible’ for the club.
City is seen as a possible destination for Messi after he handed in a transfer request at Barcelona this week.
Kompany believes that if he made the switch to the Etihad Stadium Messi would work extremely well with Pep Guardiola, with the pair having enjoyed much success together at Barcelona.
City legend Kompany added that he feels Messi would be able to help City win the Champions League.
As reported by The Sun, Kompany said: ‘It’d be incredible for the club to have a player like him — he could help them take the next step by winning the Champions League.
‘I know Guardiola’s way of thinking, so I can well imagine the two of them will still have a rapport.
‘If Messi has decided to leave Barcelona then I can only respect his decision.’
Kompany, who recently retired from playing to focus on his duties as manager of Anderlecht, is eager for the transfer to happen.
He said: ‘Let’s be clear — as a City fan, I hope Messi joins them.
‘I can imagine Pep and Messi still have one another’s phone numbers. So they can give one another a call.’
Messi is eager to leave Barcelona in the wake of their harrowing 8-2 Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich, which ensured that the Catalan club ended the season without a trophy.
This week Messi informed recently-appointed Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman of his desire to leave the club.
However, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has stated that he is willing to leave the club if it means Messi will stay.
