Jose Mourinho’s Roma office still has a photo of Manchester United’s Europa League victory hanging on the wall.

JOSE MOURINHO’S office at Roma still has a picture of his Europa League triumph on the wall.

Rafa Benitez’s Europa League victory at Chelsea in 2013 was dismissed by the Portuguese, who claimed such a feat would be a ‘disappointment’ to him.

“I’m not interested in winning the Europa League,” he stated.

“It would be a huge letdown.”

I don’t want my players to believe the Europa League is a competition they are competing in.”

Four years later, when he won the competition with Man United, he changed his tune, sneaking the Red Devils into the Champions League through the backdoor.

“But if we say, ‘Come on, next season we are going to win the Europa League,’ that is a different feeling,” Mourinho said last year while managing Spurs.

“As a result, I speak about this adversity.

It doesn’t matter to me if you bring it up all the time.

It makes no difference to me.

I hold the competition in high regard.”

The picture of him kissing the Europa League trophy, rather than his Champions League victories at Porto and Inter Milan, hangs on the wall of his Roma office, demonstrating his newfound “respect” for the competition.

Mourinho, 58, will, however, have more recent bad memories of the Europa League.

In the previous season’s competition, his Spurs team was thrashed by Dinamo Zagreb.

The Lilywhites capitulated in Croatia, losing 3-0 after extra time in a performance that captain Hugo Lloris described as a “disgrace.”

Mourinho was fired from his job less than a month later.

His Roma team is in the Europa Conference League this season.

Even this lower-level competition hasn’t been easy.

The Italians were thrashed 6-1 by BodoGlimt of Norway, prompting Mourinho to scold his players.
