In a fresh setback for Lewis Hamilton’s Formula One title bid, Max Verstappen faces a grid penalty.
After engine problems during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, Max Verstappen may face a grid penalty later in the season.
After flaws in his car’s engine were discovered, Max Verstappen’s ambition to dethrone reigning Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton could face another setback. The Red Bull driver might face a grid penalty if the faults are severe enough to necessitate an engine swap.
Red Bull team advisor Helmut Marko remarked after the Hungarian Grand Prix:
“The engine was no longer usable, and we’re still looking into whether we can preserve it.”
Honda and Red Bull were originally pleased with how the engine performed during Friday’s practice session in Hungary, but as the weekend progressed, numerous concerns surfaced, prompting Honda to replace the unit.
Each driver is only allowed three new engines per season, and if Honda is unable to resolve the faults during the season, they will very certainly be forced to utilize a fourth engine and face penalties.
Marko appeared pessimistic about the engine’s chances of being saved, claiming that the issues stemmed from Verstappen’s devastating incident with Hamilton at Silverstone the previous Grand Prix.
“At the moment, we have to anticipate we’ll bring in a fourth engine, which means we’ll have a grid penalty,” he explained.
“The accident at Silverstone caused the damage.”
The possibility of a further penalty for Red Bull as a result of that incident, as well as the circumstances of the Hungarian Grand Prix, will only serve to exacerbate the already tense relations between Formula 1’s most competitive teams.
