How will George Russell react if Valtteri Bottas is chosen ahead of him by Mercedes for the 2022 season?

Next season, George Russell might be a contender for the title with Mercedes.

When asked about the possibility of partnering Lewis Hamilton for Mercedes next year, George Russell was philosophical. The Williams driver is widely expected to eventually replace Valtteri Bottas, who is under increasing pressure to improve his performance as his contract nears expiration.

Bottas is currently languishing behind Hamilton in the driver’s standings, implying that Mercedes could be caught off guard if the seven-time champion decides to retire.

The 36-year-old Brit recently signed a deal with the Silver Arrows through 2023, so retirement is not expected anytime soon.

Despite this, many believe that a second seat swap at Mercedes, with Bottas’ contract expiring at the end of the year, would be prudent.

“I am not one to believe in luck,” Russell told Autocar. To tell you the truth, you create your own luck.

Lewis Hamilton was in tears as he spoke out against racism in the Formula One world.

“I’m not going to turn around and say, ‘That’s lucky!’ if I find myself in a world-championship-winning car next year. However, if I don’t receive it, I’m not going to blame it on bad luck.

“You are where you are due of your achievements and accomplishments, whether they are on course or off track.

“That’s my mindset, and I don’t put my faith in luck. I don’t expect everyone to crash and I to win the race.

“I’m counting on me to perform the best job I can with the squad.”

Although the 23-year-old appears to dismiss the concept of ‘luck,’ he is undoubtedly owed some good fortune after a string of failures in his fledgling Formula One career.

The kid finished 11th last time out in Austria, narrowly missing out on his first points for Williams.

Last year, he was on his way to a thrilling triumph while filling in for a Covid-struck Hamilton in the Mercedes car before a puncture ended his race.

Russell, a Mercedes-affiliated junior driver, is widely expected to make the jump up to the title-challenging squad, sooner or later.

Many respected personalities in the sport agree, with Damon Hill, a former world champion, predicting that the sale is “done” and Martin Brundle speculating. “Brinkwire News in Condensed Form.”
