George Russell issues a warning to Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen about a potential early-season threat.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have been issued a warning by GEORGE RUSSELL.

George Russell, a Mercedes driver, has warned Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen that they may be surprised in the season’s first races.

This year, new F1 rules go into effect in an attempt to increase competition in the sport.

Constructors have been battling to gain an advantage over their competitors by reducing the cost cap and tightening regulations.

Mercedes and Red Bull are expected to reign supreme once more, with Hamilton seeking vengeance on Verstappen for last season’s controversial conclusion.

In 2022, the British team will be bolstered by rising star Russell, who has been promoted significantly by Williams.

However, the 23-year-old believes that some of the “underdogs” will win early in the season.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing the new cars and what they have to offer,” Russell said.

“That’s exciting, but I’m also looking forward to being a part of the development of a car that will change dramatically over the course of a season, working with designers, working on the simulator, and putting a lot of effort into progress.”

“I’m sure it won’t always be the fastest at race one who wins, and I’m sure there will be some interesting designs out there, as well as underdogs who win the first tests or races.”

“Whoever develops the fastest, who develops the best, and who lays the foundations for the coming years is the winner.”

“From an engineering standpoint, that’s a side I’m really excited about.”

“And then obviously collaborating with Lewis is incredibly exciting.”

I’m in a unique position to work alongside the best in the world.

“This is an incredible opportunity for me to advance as a driver once more and see how I do.”

Russell would have won the Sakhir Grand Prix in 2020 if he hadn’t had a late tyre failure while filling in for a Covid-afflicted Hamilton.

The youngster has shown plenty of signs that he has the speed to compete with the leaders.

And Red Bull boss Helmut Marko believes that this could be good news for his team, as any win for Russell will result in points being lost for Hamilton.

“First and foremost, I have to see how fast Russell is,” Marko told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Last season, he was quick in qualifying.”
