Gary Neville has advised Manchester United on how much to pay for Declan Rice of West Ham. After the Hammers hammered Leicester City 4-1 to take top of the Premier League, the Red Devils great suggested Rice could play in practically any midfield position.
Rice was one of several excellent players for David Moyes’ team, which thrashed the Foxes 4-0 with to goals from Pablo Fornals, Said Benrahma, and Michail Antonio.
For some time, the 22-year-old has been linked with a move to United, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rumored to be looking for a deep-lying midfielder before the transfer market closes next week.
According to reports, United director of football John Murtough could include Jesse Lingard in a part-exchange deal to bring Rice to Old Trafford, with the Hammers putting a hefty price tag on the midfielder in an attempt to keep him.
But, as he praised Rice and his teammate Tomas Soucek, Neville advised his previous club how much they should spend to sign him.
“The two midfield players, two centre-backs, and Antonio up front, keep them fit – particularly the two central midfield players and Antonio – if those three stay fit, they’re going to have a really good season because they’ll win a lot of football matches,” Neville said of West Ham on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.
“Those two center midfielders provide a fantastic foundation for them,” says the coach.
“Do you like Declan Rice now?” Jamie Carragher baited his colleague commentator, to which Neville answered, “I’ve always liked him.” Declan Rice is someone with whom I have no issues. The question is, if you had 80 or 100 million pounds to spend on him, would you do so?”
“50, 60 million,” Neville answered when asked how much he would spend to land Rice.
“£100m I’d say no, but as a midfielder alongside Soucek, I think they’re a great combination.”
Rice and Soucek, according to Neville, could play in any team’s engine room save Manchester City’s.
The former Red Devils stated, “You’d want them in your midfield.” “Brinkwire News in Condensed Form.”
