Nobody could have predicted that Antonin Kinsky would become one of Tottenham’s heroes in their struggle to survive in the Premier League after his gloomy departure from Madrid’s Metropolitano.
With just 17 minutes remaining and Atletico leading 3-0, Kinsky appeared as though he might never play for Spurs again when he was replaced by temporary manager Igor Tudor.
The young Czech appeared upset. The humiliation of his departure as teammates hurried down the tunnel to comfort him added to his two errors.
After two months, Kinsky has established himself as a dominant force in the Spurs goal, earning valuable points and keeping them above the drop zone with his late saves. Tudor is no longer with the team.
Denying Sean Longstaff, who raced clear in the eighth minute of stoppage time and took aim from the corner of the six-yard box, was a fantastic response on Monday against Leeds.
Sean Longstaff had surged clear, but Antonin Kinsky made a fantastic save to deny him.
To keep the score tied at one, Kinsky flung up his right hand and pushed the scorching drive against the bar. Despite having a lead, Spurs were content to secure another point at this point.
He made another outstanding save in the first half, stopping Joe Rodon’s header on the line by going low to his left. His name was being sung by Spurs supporters.
The 23-year-old had made a spectacular stop to reach a twisting free kick fired by Joao Gomes in the eighth minute of extra time just over two weeks prior at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
A terrible run of 15 Premier League games without a victory was ended by this save at Molineux, which preserved a 1-0 lead.
Spurs would still be behind relegation rivals West Ham without the two saves, which were worth three points.
With a far better goal differential and two games left against Chelsea and Everton at home, they are currently two points ahead. When asked about Kinsky following the stalemate with Leeds, Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi responded, “He’s improving a lot.” West Ham’s next two games are at Newcastle and at home against Leeds. “He’s an excellent goalie.” I knew him before coming to Tottenham, so I didn’t have any doubts in my early days. “He played in Madrid, made that mistake, and it was tough for him,” I said. He deserves to play a game like today because of his wonderful personality and strong moral character.
Since joining from Empoli in 2023, Guglielmo Vicario has been the Spurs’ top player.
Due to a persistent hernia issue, Italian Vicario did not start the opening leg of a last-16 Champions League match against Atletico in Madrid.
However, he played in a 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest, which ended up being Tudor’s final game in command, and started the next three games before having surgery during the March international break.
Due to Vicario’s absence, Kinsky was forced back into the squad when De Zerbi arrived. Less than a month after that evening in Madrid, Kinsky was involved in a collision that left captain Cristian Romero out for the remainder of the season.
At the Stadium of Light, Romero collided with the charging Kinsky after being prodded in the back by Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey.
After sustaining damage to his medial knee ligaments, the Spurs captain sobbed as he left the pitch.
Kinsky, who suffered a head cut in the collision, was not at all at fault, but his comeback was hardly auspicious. To make matters worse, Spurs were defeated.
But since then, his stature has increased and his confidence has skyrocketed. Additionally, he feels more at ease with the ball at his feet than Vicario, who De Zerbi maintains is still his top custodian but is not yet prepared to make a comeback.
After a catastrophe at Atletico Madrid, Kinsky is deserving of his spot.
Vicario’s chances of playing again this season are dwindling. In fact, if a mooted £20 million transfer to Inter Milan goes through, there’s a chance he won’t play for Spurs again.
Kinsky, on the other hand, should continue to play for the team.
He was resigned to looking for a loan move in the summer to find the regular games needed to rehabilitate his reputation away from Spurs and the spotlight of the Premier League, so this is an amazing turn of events.
Rather, under extreme pressure, Kinsky passed a rigorous exam. Since he rejoined the team, Spurs have scored eight points in five games while giving up only five.
Despite the instability of the short Tudor era, they gave up 13 goals in their five prior Premier League games with Vicario in goal.
Kinsky will have a better chance of starting as the Spurs’ top player in the upcoming season if he keeps up his current level of play until the end of the current campaign.
