Following Patrick Cantlay’s BMW Championship victory, automatic US Ryder Cup spots have been confirmed.

Following the BMW Championship, the six automatic spots in the US Ryder Cup team were confirmed.

Following his win in the second FedEx Cup play-off at the BMW Championship, Patrick Cantlay earned the sixth and final automatic position in the US Ryder Cup team.

Cantlay defeated Bryson DeChambeau in a dramatic six-hole play-off on Sunday at Caves Valley, where the Americans put on an epic struggle.

After a spectacular 20-foot putt for birdie from the world No. 4, and after DeChambeau missed his 12-foot effort, Cantlay was awarded the FedEx Cup play-off winner for the first time.

With the win, the 29-year-old is now the man to beat in the FedEx Cup rankings heading into the Tour Championship finale next week, with DeChambeau in second and Tony Finau in third.

NEWS FLASH:

However, Cantlay will also receive a key automatic qualifying position in Steve Stricker’s American Ryder Cup team as a result of his victory.

Following his sixth PGA Tour victory, the FedEx Cup leader expressed his eagerness to compete in the team event in Wisconsin next month.

“I’m ecstatic,” he said. This week, Fred Couples texted me to say that it looks like he’ll be one of the assistant captains, and that he’ll be up there. Obviously, I’ve been speaking with Xander [Schauffele], as well as JT (Justin Thomas) and Jordan, and we’re all very excited.”

Cantlay was just outside the automatic Ryder Cup spots heading into last week’s penultimate FedEx Cup play-off, meaning that if he didn’t win at Caves Valley on Sunday, he’d have to rely on a captain’s pick, which would have come after another outstanding Tour season.

Despite the fact that many saw the 29-year-old as a shoe-in for a spot on Stricker’s team, the American confessed it was wonderful to qualify without having to rely on a wildcard pick.

“It’s fantastic to get in on points, and I’m definitely looking forward to the entire event,” he added. I’ve heard and seen a lot about it since I was a kid. I’m confident it’ll be everything I’ve hoped for and more. I’m going to lock myself in there, and hopefully we’ll win.”

Cantlay now joins Collin Morikawa and Dustin Johnson on the “Brinkwire Summary News” team.
