Following Lionel Messi’s departure, Barcelona presents Ansu Fati with the legendary number 10 shirt.
For the first time in 13 years, Barcelona has given the number 10 shirt to a new holder.
Following Lionel Messi’s departure, Barcelona has given wonderkid Ansu Fati the renowned No 10 shirt. Messi has worn the shirt since 2008, but it was left empty after the Argentine’s departure.
Last month, Messi left the Camp Nou after it was revealed that his boyhood club could not afford to maintain their star player, despite the Argentine’s promise to take a 50% wage cut.
Many expected the No. 10 shirt to be retired in Messi’s honor after he made 778 appearances for the Catalan giants, scoring 672 goals and collecting 34 championships.
Ronald Koeman’s team, on the other hand, has wasted no time in reassigning the renowned number to Fati.
Despite the fact that the 18-year-old has only made 31 appearances for Barcelona in his career, the club is anticipating he will be the club’s next superstar striker.
Fati entered Barcelona’s academy when he was ten years old in 2012, and six years later he made his first-team debut.
A week later, at the age of 16 years and 304 days, the Spaniard scored his first goal for the club, becoming him Barcelona’s youngest ever goalscorer.
Fati was named to the first team for the following campaign after a strong breakthrough season in 2019/20.
The Spain international tore the meniscus in his left knee in a match against Real Betic in November 2020, necessitating surgery that kept him out until last month.
Fati will be hoping to return to full training and demonstrate to the world that he is the appropriate player to meet the high expectations that the no.10 shirt brings.
Fati was revealed to be the new successor to the kingdom in a video posted on Twitter, in which he was seen wearing the club’s new kit, which included his entire name on the back.
“Ansu Fati gets a new shirt number,” Barcelona said in an official statement, justifying their choice.
“After wearing the number 22 and subsequently the number 17, the young Barça attacker will proudly wear the number 10 shirt, which has been worn by luminaries like Leo Messi, Ronaldinho, and Rivaldo.”
