Everton are pursuing Atletico Madrid right-back Santiago Arias as they look to begin the revamp of their squad.
Arias, a Colombia international who played against England at the 2018 World Cup, is known to Everton’s director of football Marcel Brands, who signed him for PSV Eindhoven in July 2013.
Everton have been looking to sign high-class competition for Seamus Coleman for a number of years and last season had Djibril Sidibe, on loan from Monaco, as the club captain’s cover.
Jonjoe Kenny, the former England Under-21 international, has returned to the club following a season with Schalke and Everton are planning for him to be a part of their squad for the new campaign but that has not stopped them moving for Arias.
There is no indication at present in terms of how much Arias will cost but Sportsmail understands talks between Atletico and Everton have advanced and the 28-year-old is in line to move to Merseyside.
Carlo Ancelotti, Everton’s manager, is determined to make significant improvements to his squad during the window after using the first seven months of his reign to assess where they stand.
Everton had wanted to sign Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille – and had mapped out a £30million deal before the coronavirus pandemic – but the left-sided defender now appears likely to join Arsenal or Napoli.
A move for Pierre-Emile Hojberg also fell short as the Denmark midfielder wanted to move to Tottenham from Southampton. Ancelotti is determined to add more energy and aggression to his midfield.
