Even Mercedes upgrades, according to Lewis Hamilton, “won’t be enough” to catch Max Verstappen.
The championship race, according to Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes, could be over.
Even if they arrive at Silverstone with upgrades, Juan Pablo Montoya feels Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes have a virtually impossible assignment this season to beat Red Bull and Max Verstappen.
Verstappen now leads Hamilton by 32 points coming into the British Grand Prix, with Red Bull dominating the Constructors’ Championship by 44 points after ten rounds.
Red Bull has dominated the last five races, and Verstappen is hoping to make it four wins in a row to extend his lead even further.
Red Bull has made numerous enhancements during the last three races, including a new front wing, a new floor, a new rear wing, and a new power unit, whereas Mercedes has made no changes. It has prompted Hamilton to demand that the seven-time world champions improve if they are to remain in contention.
“In my opinion, Mercedes will have a terrible time,” Montoya told Motorsport.com.
“Max and Red Bull have certainly gained traction at this point. Max is doing fantastic; he’s there every week. I don’t think they’ll be able to defeat him.
“The only thing that works in Mercedes’ favor is that they’ll get enhancements at Silverstone. Hopefully, that move will be sufficient to bring us closer to Red Bull, but I honestly don’t believe it will be. I don’t think they’ll be able to turn this around.”
Mercedes has already stated that their attention is now on constructing their car for 2022, and that the W12 will only receive a few upgrades this season.
Toto Wolff, team chief, stated during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend that the team would bring only one extra package to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 18.
Hamilton is aiming to break Michael Schumacher’s record of eight world championships, the most by any driver in Formula One history.
However, as Mercedes falls further behind race after race, Montoya believes that the champagne for Hamilton this season may have to be put on hold.
“Having the fastest makes it much easier to be entirely in control.”Brinkwire Summary News”.
