Dustin Poirier discusses Conor McGregor’s trilogy as the UFC star admits to having a “target on my back.”
Conor McGregor’s ambition for a trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier could come true.
Dustin Poirier has shown interest in facing Conor McGregor a third time, stating that he believes he is the undisputed UFC lightweight champion. At UFC 257, Poirier knocked out McGregor in the second round.
After his spectacular knockout of McGregor last month, Poirier is at the top of the MMA world right now.
At UFC 257, the ‘Diamond’ put up a career-best performance to knock out McGregor in dramatic fashion.
He controlled the opening round by repeatedly kicking the Irishman in the shins.
Poirier’s leg kicks prevented McGregor from moving around the cage and staying away, letting Poirier to tee off whenever he wanted.
Poirier unleashed an attack on McGregor in the second round, stopping him with a flurry of punishing blows.
With the victory, he is in line to challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight title, which he currently holds. ‘The Eagle,’ on the other hand, is unlikely to come out of retirement.
Poirier might face former Bellator champion Michael Chandler for the championship after Chandler defeated Dan Hooker in the first round on the UFC 257 undercard.
And the ‘Diamond’ believes he is the undisputed UFC champion and is preparing a list of potential opponents.
Poirier told MMA Junkie via talkSPORT, “I’ve got a target on my back.”
“I just knocked out Conor McGregor, and now I’m the number one contender, and the only man above me, [Khabib Nurmagomedov], may never fight again.
“Everyone wants to climb that ladder, but to do so, you have to beat the ones at the top.
“You have to beat the next guy in line, so I understand why I have a target on my back, and I proudly wear it.
“I am the lightweight champion who has yet to be crowned.
“If Khabib isn’t available, I’m the best player in the division.
“Former world interim champion and championship challenger.
“I recently defeated a previous world champion in two divisions. I am the victor. That is something I am aware of.”
