During her Wimbledon run, Emma Raducanu was dubbed “the genuine deal” and compared to her tennis idol.

Emma Raducanu, a Romanian favorite, is having a fantastic Wimbledon season.

As the teenager prepares to face Ajla Tomljanovic in the fourth round at Wimbledon, former world No 1 Mats Wilander has predicted Emma Raducanu to have a long and successful career at the highest levels of the game. Raducanu has been one of the tournament’s success stories, producing some fantastic tennis to keep her Grand Slam dream alive while also impressing many of the spectators in attendance at the All England Club.

The 18-year-old stunned last year’s runner-up in the French Open, Marketa Vondrousova, in the second round, before advancing to the last 16 on Saturday with another nerveless performance against Sorana Cirstea.

Raducanu fell behind 3-1 in the first set, but rallied to win and extend her inaugural Grand Slam campaign by at least two days.

She only finished her A-levels this year and made her maiden WTA appearance last month, but she has swiftly established herself as a local favourite at Wimbledon and will be hoping to maintain her winning form for as long as possible.

Wilander waxed poetic about Raducanu’s outstanding mental approach and age-defying poise despite her tender years following her latest victory.

The 56-year-old told Eurosport that Raducanu has the potential to become a top-level player in the future, conceding that she has a lot in common with her idol, two-time Grand Slam champion Li Na.

“Amazing scenes,” Wilander added. “I’m talking about her thinking. She’s the real deal. A fantastic thinker and a fantastic mover.

“She gave a fantastic performance. She had a fantastic attitude, and she handled the situation perfectly.

“She had so many break points in the second set, and she handled it like a seasoned tennis pro who has been on the circuit for years.

“She performs in the style of her idol, Li Na. The forehand is nearly identical to the backhand. She is a superb tennis player who is just going to become better. She is going to get better and better.

“The fact that she turned the match around and Cirstea returned is such a confidence booster and a sign that she is here to stay.
