Despite a disastrous Premier League championship defense, Liverpool legend John Barnes believes the Reds should continue with Arne Slot

Legendary Liverpool player John Barnes has maintained that his old team should “absolutely” retain Arne Slot as head coach in order to avoid becoming like their rivals Manchester United.

Just a year ago, Slot—the Bill Shankly of Liverpool’s current era—was hailed as the “new Bob Paisley” after winning the Premier League in his first season at Anfield, following the legendary figure of Jurgen Klopp.

But his second season in charge turned out to be a complete failure, with the Reds’ arduous championship defense ranking among the worst in top-flight history. They had their lowest result in ten years, finishing 24 points short of their championship total.

Even though they were still able to play Champions League football because of the division’s intense competition, which resulted in lower point totals, supporters’ demands for Slot’s dismissal are growing.

However, Barnes, who spent ten years at Liverpool and won two league titles, doesn’t think it would be prudent for the team to let go of the Dutchman because there aren’t many managers available right now.

“When people talk about getting rid of Arne Slot, tell me who should come in and who would do a better job,” the 62-year-old stated. Xabi Alonso might not have been successful. Enrique Luis? He will not be visiting Liverpool.

After Liverpool struggled to 60 points in his second season with the team, Arne Slot is under pressure.

Despite the 24-point decline, John Barnes thinks Liverpool should continue with Slot.

Bring Jurgen Klopp back? Since he won’t be returning, supporters will follow Manchester United’s lead when discussing potential replacements. “After Sir Alex Ferguson left, Manchester United hired David Moyes because he was a good manager, and he was let go because there was a belief that what happened under him wouldn’t have happened under Fergie.”

“Then Jose Mourinho took over, followed by Louis van Gaal, who had won the Champions League twice. “We can’t keep living in the past and going from manager to manager because what happened after Kenny Dalglish left Liverpool.” Every manager who took over after Kenny was informed that the Liverpool way wasn’t this way. After Jurgen took over, everyone wanted things his way. Therefore, if we want a manager who will submit to Jurgen’s methods and actions, then no manager will come. “Luis Enrique? I don’t want Liverpool to follow Manchester United’s path.” He’s not coming, in my opinion. Guardiola Pep? I don’t see the point of getting rid of Arne Slot because he isn’t coming.

Andoni Iraola is one manager available after his three-year tenure at Bournemouth ended.

After leading the Cherries to the Europa League for the first time in the team’s history and finishing just three points behind Liverpool in sixth place, the Spaniard is in high demand.

Iraola’s future has been the subject of rumors, with Bayer Leverkusen reportedly in talks with the coach about their open management position. He has also been connected to the Reds, Crystal Palace, and Serie A powerhouse AC Milan.

Andoni Iraola, who left his position at Bournemouth, has been connected to the Reds.

In the event that Slot leaves Anfield, Barnes isn’t sure Iraola would be the best candidate to take over.

Speaking on Betfred’s behalf, Barnes continued, “Remember Thomas Frank at Brentford? Didn’t he do a great job? After that, he joined a larger club with more demanding standards.

“I’m sure he’s a great manager, but there isn’t a 100% guarantee that he’ll do well.” “It’s easier at a smaller club and that’s not me saying he can’t do the job, but having little possession, sitting back and catching teams on the counter-attack is maybe suited to smaller clubs. Then, when you’re asked to play an expansive game, which is what Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Manchester United are asked to do.” I’m still a fan of Arne Slot, but I’ll fully support anyone who runs Liverpool.
