Dayot Upamecano was lauded by BT Sport pundits after a ‘formidable’ display during RB Leipzig’s Champions League triumph over Atletico Madrid.
The highly-rated centre-back was one of the best performers as his team advanced to the semi-finals to face Paris Saint-Germain after beating Diego Simeone’s side.
It was a disappointing result for Simeone’s side after their impressive round of 16 win over current holders Liverpool, and Diego Costa had a tough night up against the 21-year-old Upamecano who marked him out of the game.

BT Sport pundits Jermaine Jenas and Rio Ferdinand praised the talented Frenchman following Leipzig’s win.
Jenas said: ‘When you look at Upamecano going up against Diego Costa today, it was like no point Costa even being there.’
At half-time Ferdinand said Upamecano ‘manhandled’ the Spaniard who had a very frustrating night as Atletico crashed out.
Ferdinand added after the game: ‘Upamecano was the best player tonight he was formidable on the pitch.
‘But they were all defending for their lives. They matched up with Atletico. You need heart and desire and they all showed that especially late on in the game.’
Upamecano is currently one of the most highly-valued young defenders in world football.
Several teams have been linked with him in recent times, but the 21-year-old committed his future to Leipzig by extending his contract until 2023.
Jenas said: ‘It looks so easy to him the game. He looks like he is playing with his mates and that’s when you know you’ve got a good player.’
Leipzig took the victory thanks to goals from Dani Olmo and a late winner from Tyler Adams.
They will go on to the semi-finals to face PSG and manager Julian Nagelsmann acknowledged he had a tough test ahead of him.
He said: ‘Atletico defend like all the games very good but at the end I think we were a bit better in the final third which I think makes the difference today.
‘We did not create many chances but they also didn’t create many chances but we were a bit more dangerous in front of goal. I think it’s okay we’ve made the semi-finals.
‘There are great emotions I am very proud of my team but as a manager you have to look forward to the next game and prepare for the next opponents.
‘Perhaps we’ll drink a beer together at the hotel but tomorrow we focus on PSG.
‘I think we’ll need to be very fast in the defensive line but as you see Upamecano is very quick and we can defend well. Trying to cover them man on man won’t be easy as they’ve got a lot of stars but we’ll try get into the final.’
