David Jenkins, Tom Daley’s former diving coach and a member of Team GB, has died at the age of 31.
Over the weekend, Team GB coach David Jenkins died sadly.
David Jenkins, a key part of Team GB’s coaching team, died suddenly at the age of 31. On Monday, British Swimming announced the tragic news of Tom Daley’s former coach’s death, however the reason of death is yet unknown.
Jenkins’ death comes as a shock just months after he helped Team GB’s divers win a joint-record number of medals at the Tokyo Olympics.
At the London Aquatics Centre, he trained Noah Williams and Scarlett Mew-Jensen, who both competed for Team GB in Japan.
Jenkins was the Development Lead Coach at Dive London, which is home to Olympic gold medalists Tom Daley and Matty Lee.
Despite the fact that he wasn’t the duo’s primary coach, he surely contributed to their Tokyo 2020 victory.
British Swimming released a moving message following Jenkins’ passing, reflecting his popularity among the diving community.
It said: “British Swimming can confirm the passing of diving coach David Jenkins over the weekend with great regret.
“Our hearts go out to David’s wife, family, and friends, and we respectfully request that their privacy, as well as the privacy of the British diving community, be respected at this tragic time.
“We will work closely with employees and sportsmen who have been affected by this tragic news.
“During his eight years with the diving program at the London Aquatics Centre, David, 31, was the Development Lead Coach for Dive London, overseeing the advancement of the next generation of great athletes.
“Away from the elite level of the sport, David’s passion for coaching and the sport led him to become a key member of the Tom Daley Diving Academy, where he taught hundreds of children how to dive.
“Due to his wonderful, kind attitude, he was immensely beloved among the diving community.
“As a former gymnast and diver, David had a bright future ahead of him and will be sorely missed by everyone at British Diving and GLL.”
Jenkins’ contribution to the development of several of the country’s top divers was also recognized by Swim England chief executive Jane Nickerson.
