With Cristiano Ronaldo’s spectacular comeback to United, James has fallen further down Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attacking pecking order.
The Portuguese has returned to Old Trafford 12 years after leaving for Real Madrid in a then-world-record £90 million deal.
James has made two starts this season, including a 5-1 hammering of Leeds, but has failed to make an impression.
The 23-year-old was bought from Swansea City in a £20 million move in the summer of 2019 and has had a good start.
However, he has struggled to find regular action and has recently joined Leeds.
Since being close to joining Marcelo Bielsa’s side two and a half years ago, the winger has indicated that he has grown as a player.
“I believe that was the best option I could have made for my football career. Don’t get me wrong, I had a fantastic time and met some fantastic people,” James told Sky Sports.
“The staff was wonderful to both myself and the fans. It’s time for me to move on with my profession and move forward. It’s something I’m looking forward to.
“I’m a unique player and individual. When I came close to signing here the last time, I had barely played half a season.
“At the highest level, I’ve played more games, and I’d like to think I can bring something new here.”
James was close to joining Leeds in January 2019, six months before completing his switch to Manchester United.
He had gone as far as posing with a Leeds shirt as a Swansea City player before the move fell through at the final minute on deadline day.
