Conor McGregor is being asked to leave the UFC in order to face Manny Pacquiao in a boxing match.
McGregor was defeated by Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 and has been advised to fight Pacquiao in the boxing ring instead.
Conor McGregor has been advised to leave the UFC in order to compete in a boxing superfight against Manny Pacquiao. The Irishman was knocked out in the second round of his return fight against Dustin Poirier at UFC 257, earning him a six-month medical suspension.
Boxing icon George Foreman has urged McGregor to return to the ring and fight Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao.
The 32-year-old last fought in the ring in 2017, when he battled Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas, losing in round 10 against Mayweather.
Since losing to Mayweather, McGregor has only fought three times in the UFC, with victories over Donald Cerrone in 2017 and defeats to Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018 and Poirier in January.
Despite winning the first round of his bout against Poirier, McGregor suffered his first TKO/KO loss in MMA after a sequence of leg kicks hampered his movement.
McGregor was given a 180-day medical suspension following his loss due to his injured leg, unless he receives clearance from a doctor regarding his right tibia and fibula.
With Poirier’s technical knockout still fresh in McGregor’s mind, Foreman has advised him to stay away from the Octagon.
McGregor also has a decent chance of overcoming Pacquiao, who is widely considered as one of the best professional boxers in history, according to the American.
“It’s difficult for McGregor to understand, but he’s a better puncher than he is in MMA,” Foreman said to the Daily Star on Sunday.
“Right now, I’d rather see him in boxing matches.” I believe that if he fights Pacquiao, he will be able to defeat him — with good regulations and a 10-round battle, McGregor would be able to defeat him.
“He’s already used to boxing; MMA isn’t going to work for him. Pacquiao is a fantastic fighter, but McGregor can defeat him in a boxing match.”
McGregor’s loss to Mayweather does give him hope of defeating Pacquiao, as he landed 111 of the 430 punches he threw against the American, which is more than Pacquiao landed in his first fight with Mayweather.
