Christian Horner, the Red Bull chief, enjoys engaging Mercedes competitor Toto Wolff in a ‘real scrap’.

Despite some heated clashes, Christian Horner claims he’s enjoying his relationship with Toto Wolff this season.

Part of the fun this season, according to Red Bull head Christian Horner, is winding up his Mercedes colleague and major title contender Toto Wolff in a “genuine scrap” between their two drivers.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have been locked in a furious title battle throughout the season, with the two separated by just two points heading into the Turkish Grand Prix, and a 15-point gap between Mercedes and Red Bull in the constructors standings.

But tensions have been rising off the track as well, with the two team presidents trading jabs in the media in an intriguing split between the two.

As the battle of words about flexi-wings escalated between the two in Azerbaijan this season, Wolff referred to Horner as “a bit of a windbag who likes to be on TV.”

Horner told Wolff to “keep his mouth shut” and “be careful what you wish for” after speculating that Red Bull would challenge Mercedes’ flexible front wings.

Horner was recently left angry at Wolff’s driver Hamilton for colliding with Verstappen at the British Grand Prix, but when the two collided again at the Italian Grand Prix, sentiments were surprisingly quiet.

Now that Hamilton is leading the points race, Horner admits the two have respect for one another, but that they approach their roles in completely different ways.

Over the Russian Grand Prix weekend, Horner told Channel 4’s Lee McKenzie, “Of course, this is the first time Mercedes, and the first time Toto has been in a scenario where he has been challenged.”

“He’s been in a scenario where the drivers were already signed and the engine was already in place when he joined the team.

“He’s done an excellent job of keeping the squad in contention, but he didn’t have much competition. It’s the first time there’s been an actual scrap, a true competition.

“The teams have mutual respect, but we function in distinct ways.

“While Toto is in the garage with the press guy, I want to be on the front lines, sitting on the pit wall with the strategists and engineers.

“There are diverse functions, roles, and outlooks, but the rivalry is the same. “Brinkwire Summary News “..
