Chelsea confirm Saul Niguez’s £34 million deal 45 minutes after the deadline has passed.
Chelsea announced Saul Niguez as their third summer signing over an hour after the window’s deadline had passed.
Chelsea have finalized the signing of Saul Niguez on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid, with the option of signing him permanently for £34 million next summer.
After back-up goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli and striker Romelu Lukaku, who joined in a club-record deal, the Blues announced Saul’s arrival 45 minutes after the 11 p.m. deadline on Tuesday.
Chelsea had until midnight UK time to complete the transfer, but they were able to accomplish so with 15 minutes to spare, much to the pleasure of the club’s supporters.
Saul has spent his whole career with Atletico Madrid, with the exception of a season spent on loan at Rayo Vallecano. He has 340 appearances for the La Liga champions, scoring 43 goals in the process, and has 19 caps for Spain.
Despite the fact that the hardworking 26-year-old has been in all three of Atleti’s matches this season, Diego Simeone has allowed him to leave.
Saul will provide Thomas Tuchel a significant extra option in midfield, when he previously only had N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek as alternatives.
“I am very pleased to start this new challenge with Chelsea,” Saul said of his move to the English capital.
“Blues supporters, I am now one of you, and I can’t wait to put on the jersey, start training, and meet you all. “Hope to see you soon!”
“We welcome Saul to the club and believe he completes our team as we fight for honours in five different competitions this season,” Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said.
“He is a proven winner and a player with a wealth of experience, and we know he will be well-suited to the challenges we will face in the coming year on all fronts.”
“It’s a stupidly excellent deal, especially £5m loan fee as well, it’s an option to buy, we need to cover in the middle of the park,” former Chelsea midfielder Jason Cundy said before the agreement was confirmed on talkSPORT.
