Celtic and Rangers have officially missed out on Alfie Doughty after the player today joined Stoke City.

Both sides of the Old Firm divide had been keen to bring the Charlton winger to Glasgow with the Hoops offering a pre-contract and Gers contacting his representatives over a deal to bring him in the summer.

The Potters wanted the winger this month and lodged a bid of around £600,000 and, when the options were put in front of Doughty he opted for the English Championship.

Celtic had been tracking Doughty since last summer and did make cash bids of around £400,000 that were rejected. They made two offers before deciding to wait and try their luck with a pre-contract offer.

Stoke boss Michael O’Neill, now that he has landed his man, said: “We are delighted to get Alfie in. He fits the profile of type of player we want to bring to the Club – he is young, keen and wants to prove himself.

“Unfortunately, he’s injured at present but we have taken the opportunity to sign him now because he was much in demand and we have beaten off a great deal of competition.”

We at and Times Sport exclusively revealed previously that Doughty had chosen to sign for Stoke ahead of Celtic or Rangers.
