Cedric Itten’s goal should NOT have stood for Rangers at Motherwell, admits Michael Stewart – but he says the striker must have had the ‘benefit of the doubt’.
Well boss Graham Alexander was fuming when Itten headed home the leveller after Devante Cole had given the home side the lead, as he claimed the Swiss was standing in an offside position.
Footage showed he may well have had a point, but Gers finished with a point from the 1-1 draw which leaves them 21 points ahead of rivals Celtic at the top of the Premiership.
Quite how important Itten’s goal will be remains to be seen, but ex-Hearts and Hibs midfielder Stewart claims the hitman deserved the benefit of the doubt and that Motherwell can’t complain too much.
On BBC Sportscene, the pundit said: “You hear Graham Alexander saying that it’s offside.
“It’s a wonderful ball in and he is marginally but I don’t think you can complain. I don’t think you can complain, I don’t think you can have a go at the linesman for that when it’s so tight. You give the benefit of the doubt to the striker. I think it’s so close it’s difficult to get upset about that.”
