Ex-world champion Fernando Vargas has been condemned by professional and former boxers alike for failing to intervene as his son brutally knocked out an opponent during a sparring session.
Vargas’ son, Emiliano, who is a two-time national amateur champion, posted the video of him landing a flurry of unanswered punches and flooring his sparring partner on his Instagram account.
It was clear the American hopeful had a far superior skill set to the person he was sparring and many in the boxing fraternity were quick to denounce the youngster’s father for allowing the two to share the ring in the first place.
‘That’s terrible man. Hit a kid, who looks outclassed to begin with, with 15 unanswered shots after he’s already clearly been hurt… Great coaching,’ Caleb Truax wrote on Twitter.
Enzo Maccarinelli posted: ‘Terrible coaching that mate, [those two are on] completely different levels.’
Interim WBO featherweight champion Carl Frampton also criticised Emiliano for publishing the video on social media.
He wrote: ‘It’s one thing taking liberties in sparring, [but] it’s another thing to post a video.’
Vargas Snr, who hung up the gloves on an illustrious career that saw him win world titles on two occasions back in 2007, is training his son and has hopes he will follow in his footsteps by turning over to the professional ranks in the near future.
