Bryson DeChambeau opened up on the first time he met his golfing hero ‘Tiger Woods’ in 2018.
Golfing great Tiger Woods has been branded a ‘nerd’ by fellow American star Bryson DeChambeau, after the latter opened up on the first time the pair met in 2018 at Torrey Pines.
DeChambeau – who has announced himself as one of golf’s most controversial figures in recent years – revealed all on his first nerve-wracking encounter with the 82-time PGA Tour winner when appearing on the ‘Full Send Podcast’.
The pair first met when playing in a practice round at the 2021 US Open course three years ago, and DeChambeau admitted meeting, and playing with his ‘idol’ was the most nervous he had ever been on a golf course.
He said: “This is probably the most nervous I’ve ever been on the golf course in my entire life. More nervous than the Ryder Cup. More nervous than the Long Drive thing.
“It was by far the coolest, most nerve-racking experience. … He asked me to go play, and I was like, uh, yeah, let’s do it, why not. And we get out there, media everywhere. And Tiger, just stoic as ever.
“And I had been texting with him a little bit, but shook his hand and just like, nothing, there was nothing. He’d just look at you. And that’s when I first met him. You’d be like this, and he’d just look at you and just look away and not even know you were there anymore.”
The American went on to reveal that his nerves most probably got the better of him in the early stages, as conversation with his hero was limited.
He added: “That’s how weird — amazing it was. So I talked to him, cool, whatever, go to the 10th tee, hit a drive, and we’re walking down the course.
“I don’t know what to say to him because he’s my idol, right, and someone I’ve grown up wanting to play golf with and compete against. And for the first two or three holes, there was really not much at all to be said.”
Once he was finally over the nerves, the notorious big hitter went on to admit that conversation finally began to flow 12 holes into their practice outing at the California course.
