Billy Joe Saunders has put himself back in contention for a fight with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez later this year — and has offered to only be paid if he wins.
The Brit was originally set for a face-off with the Mexican champion in May, but this was scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Canelo’s planned new date of September 12 was rejected by Saunders after being unwilling to take a pay cut for the behind-closed-doors bout as well as being unable to train properly during lockdown.
But that September 12 date against an unnamed opponent now also looks in jeopardy altogether due to internal issues issues including a date clash with Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr.
And as a result Saunders has once again thrown his hat into the ring, telling iFL TV: ‘Listen, I’ll tell you the best thing for Canelo to do. Wait until December and come to a proper super-middleweight, a proper champion.
‘Wait until December, then let’s go. December, we’re ready, let’s go. Fair, even playing field, no robbery.’
The British fighter even says he is so confident of beating Canelo that he will happily only be paid for the bout if he wins.
‘I’ll tell you what I’ll do – the money I’ve signed for, keep it. I swear to God, I’ll let you keep it.
‘If he wants to come to England I’ll let him keep it and I’ll fight him for free. If I beat him, pay me what I’m contracted. If I don’t, don’t pay me. That’s how fair I can be. That’s how confident I am of beating him.’
This could well be an offer Canelo could take up, with promoter Eric Gomez revealing the Mexican is ‘desperate’ for an overseas fight in the UK in the near future, with Callum Smith another strongly linked name.
