Ben Chilwell “did not feel like part of the England team” at Euro 2020, according to Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel has spoken out about Chilwell’s rocky start at Chelsea this season.

Thomas Tuchel has voiced his displeasure with England boss Gareth Southgate’s treatment of Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell over the summer. Chilwell was a member of the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 team, however he was one of the few players who didn’t play a minute during their journey to the final.

Following his £50 million move from Leicester to Chelsea, Chilwell played three games for England in the 2020/21 season, earning a spot in Southgate’s squad.

However, after playing the entire 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 1-0 Champions League victory over Manchester City on May 29, the 24-year-old was ruled out of the Euros.

Southgate selected Luke Shaw and Kieran Trippier in the left-back position, and Tuchel has suggested that the tournament rejection had an impact on the 2021/22 season.

Chilwell has lost his starting spot at Chelsea to Marcos Alonso and has yet to play for Tuchel’s side ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League match against Zenit St Petersburg.

Tuchel revealed in his pre-match press conference on Monday that it had been difficult for him.

“He had several critical, crucial games at a high level last season. Then it was a difficult Euros for him since there were opportunities where he thought he could have played. He, on the other hand, did not.

“It was difficult because you felt he went above and above to motivate the troops. You have a sense of belonging to the group.

“However, you don’t really feel it if you don’t sweat it out on the pitch every now and again and never wear the shirt and are never really involved. It’s an odd sensation.

“It was still vital to continue exercising, and when he had a break… it was difficult for him to completely relax and let go of his personal disappointment.

“I sensed he was mentally exhausted when he arrived here, still concerned about the situation.

“At the same time, he had to accept it — Marcos made the most of his chance with such a high level of skill and attitude.

“Chilly and I had a conversation about the problem.

“He needed a little time to be patient with himself in order to rediscover the joy and make things a little easier.”Brinkwire Summary News”.
