Before his £270,000 Lamborghini struck a barrier, a driver “sounded his horn repeatedly” in an attempt to alert former England football player Raheem Sterling that he was swerving across the road.
The 31-year-old, who last represented his nation in December 2022, zigzagged across lanes on the M3 early on Thursday morning in the Hampshire town of Minley.
On suspicion of “driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a Class C drug and failing to provide a specimen,” he was stopped by police around nine in the morning and placed on bond pending further investigation.
According to a witness, Sterling’s Lamborghini Urus V8’s wheels leaped four feet into the air as a result of the accident.
At one point, he said, the football player had also drove in the direction of oncoming traffic on the incorrect side of the slip lane.
The driver, a van driver who wished to remain anonymous, told The Sun, “I saw a Lamborghini swerving just after I got on the M3 westbound. He nearly crashed into the left-hand barrier.” He nearly wrecked when he drifted left into the hard shoulder. I felt that there was a problem with this man.
The driver stated that he had to “beep him” as Sterling’s Lamborghini almost struck the side of his car.
Raheem Sterling, a former England player, has been detained on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Since leaving Manchester City for Chelsea in 2022, the 31-year-old’s career has collapsed.
He described Sterling as a “young guy with a vest on” who did not seem to hear the warning.
According to reports, the swerving then became “much worse,” requiring “four or five cars to pull over to get out of his way.”
“I was still looking in my mirrors because it was inevitable he was going to crash,” the truck driver continued.
The car then drove into a barrier, he claimed, causing the tires to fly into the air and the car to spin “about 180 degrees.”
Hampshire Police stated: “We received reports that a Lamborghini collided with barriers on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange, just before 9am on Thursday. No other vehicles were involved, and no injuries were reported.”
The motorist, a 31-year-old Berkshire resident, was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while under the influence of narcotics, driving recklessly, possessing a Class C drug, and neglecting to produce a specimen. He has been released on bond while our investigation is ongoing.
When reached by Daily Mail Sport on Friday night, a source close to Sterling described the terrible two years he has had, saying, “The psychological strain that has been put on him is immeasurable.” secluded. He’s informed he’s a flop and done the moment he touches a ball. He was heckled and mocked. He relocated to the Netherlands in an attempt to flee and rediscover his passion for the game, but the criticism persisted. He has had a really difficult few years, and this episode is part of it.
When Daily Mail Sport approached Sterling’s reps, they declined to comment.
Since joining Chelsea from Manchester City in the summer of 2022, the forward’s career has collapsed.
The Blues signed him for £50 million on a five-year contract at £325,000 per week after he won ten major trophies at City, including four Premier League crowns and the FA Cup.
He was sent to previous manager Enzo Maresca’s “bomb squad” during a turbulent period at Stamford Bridge, and he was compelled to practice away from the first team for more than six months following a sharp decline in his status.
His Blues contract was terminated a few months ago after a fruitless loan stint at Arsenal during the 2024–2025 campaign.
In February, he signed a deal with Feyenoord, where he played eight games without scoring before the season ended. His current contract is about to expire.
Before moving from Anfield to the Etihad in 2015, Sterling made his breakthrough at Liverpool as a teenager. He made 82 appearances for the England senior squad, most recently in the 2-1 loss to France in the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals.
