Cristiano Ronaldo was fortunate to escape punishment after cameras caught him hitting Dara O’Shea as he waited to take his penalty shot against Republic of Ireland in a World Cup qualifier.
Portugal was hoping to get one step closer to qualifying for the World Cup next year.
They also had a good starting lineup, with Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and Diogo Jota all starting.
Early on, the hosts dominated possession, with Ireland desperately seeking to cling on.

After checking Hendrick’s foul on Fernandes on the screen, the referee eventually directed to the spot once more.
Ronaldo had been waiting for some minutes for his chance to not only put Portugal ahead, but also to break the global record for international goals.
Prior to the meeting in Portugal, the 36-year-old was tied for 109 goals with Iranian icon Ali Daei.
However, Ireland’s youthful goalie Gavin Bazunu saved his penalty kick.
