Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is concerned about Reece James and has changed his January transfer plans as a result.

REECE JAMES has compelled Thomas Tuchel to alter his January transfer strategy.

Chelsea’s season has taken a sharp turn for the worse since their strong start, but injuries to Ben Chilwell and Reece James haven’t helped matters, and Thomas Tuchel has had to change his January transfer plans as a result.

Chelsea have suffered their first major setback under Thomas Tuchel since the German took over for Frank Lampard a year ago.

Tuchel has since led Chelsea to an unlikely Champions League victory and has re-established Chelsea as one of the best teams in the Premier League.

Tuchel also paid a club-record transfer fee to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge this summer, as the Belgian was seen as the final piece of the puzzle.

However, a slew of injuries and contract disputes behind the scenes have left Chelsea disjointed, forcing Tuchel to alter his January transfer plans.

Due to the rise of Reece James and Ben Chilwell, the wing-back position has become increasingly important in the modern game, and Chelsea were competing with Manchester City and Liverpool, who are strong in that area.

Chelsea were dealt a major blow when Chilwell suffered a season-ending injury early in the season, and Tuchel’s back line suffered a knock as he tried to reorganise.

Tuchel has covered the wing-back positions with Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta of Spain, but the Chelsea manager has admitted that he is concerned about the lack of options, and that he may have to sign a right-sided defender in addition to the left-back that the Blues were already eyeing.

“If we play in a back five, it is Azpi who replaces Reece James,” Tuchel said of the current situation.

If we play a back four, we may require a defensive full-back, which is Azpi.

“Perhaps it’s Trevoh Chalobah, but Trevoh is currently injured.”

We’ve exhausted all possibilities.

Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi are only capable of playing at the wing-back position.

“It’s not their first choice, and they’re unable to play full-back.”

Not only in terms of personnel, but also in terms of tactics, you have fewer options.

“I’m not going to get into the details.”
