Ronald Koeman is open to selling Barcelona’s second and third captains Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba as he plans a substantial overhaul at the Nou Camp this summer.
The Dutchman is expected to take over from Quique Setien this week in the wake of the club’s 8-2 Champions League humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich.
And he is planning a clearout that could see six major first-team players depart the club, according to El Periodico.
The embarrassment at the hands of Bayern came after Real Madrid regained the LaLiga title with ease, and Koeman is not going to take any half measures as he aims to get Barca back to the top of Spanish football.
He is reportedly keen to regenerate what has become a flawed dressing room at the club.
As well as Alba and Busquets, Luis Suarez, Samuel Umtiti, Arturo Vidal and Ivan Rakitic could find their heads on the chopping block.
Koeman is hopeful that slashing the wage bill by dispensing with a cabal of ageing stars could help inject some new energy and get the best out of the likes of Frenkie De Jong and Antoine Griezmann.
The report follows from Spanish outlet Cadena Ser claiming that the Dutchman and sporting director Eric Abidal will be tasked with ‘cleaning up’ the first-team squad.
Striker Luis Suarez, left-back Jordi Alba and central midfielder Ivan Rakitic are among three of the highest earners who the club are reportedly hopeful of moving on this summer.
Reports in Spain claim Rakitic has been free to leave Barcelona for three years now, and former club Sevilla are said to be interested, while other claims suggest Suarez could make a sensational return to Ajax.
The latest developments come after reports in fellow Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo that the club only consider five members of the first-team squad as unavailable for transfer during this window.
