Barcelona have made Manchester City defender Eric Garcia their key transfer target this year.
The 19-year-old defender left La Masia in 2017 to join Pep Guardiola’s side and has since featured 13 times in the Premier League.
His former club have been impressed by his performances and see him as a long-term replacement for the ageing Gerard Pique at the heart of their defence.
However, Guardiola is reluctant to let his young starlet go after he proved himself during City’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United in January.
It is believed that the club entered into contract negotiations before the coronavirus pandemic and it is expected those will restart now.
According to the Sun, a five-year deal is on the table that would more than treble his salary, taking his £12,000-a-week wages to £40,000 a week plus bonuses.
But Barca are preparing to make a transfer swoop for the Spanish U21 international who started his career in their youth system at the age of seven.
Having spent 10 years at the club, Barca hope he will return to the Nou Camp to replace Pique.
Pique, who also graduated from Barca’s famed La Masia academy, could be nearing the end of his career at the age of 33.
The Spaniard has made it clear he plans to keep playing until the end of his contract in 2022, but his future beyond that remains uncertain.
