Barcelona completes a contract swap with Samuel Umtiti in order to register Ferran Torres.
BARCELONA had hoped to offload Samuel Umtiti this month.
Barcelona has signed new signing Ferran Torres after extending Samuel Umtiti’s contract.
Due to financial difficulties, the forward was unable to register after completing a £55 million move from Manchester City.
Following Umtiti’s pay cut, Barcelona have been given the green light to sign Torres in January.
The Blaugrana has ‘increased its financial fair play quota’ by re-signing Umtiti, who was set to leave at the end of the season.
Over the course of the new four-and-a-half-year contract, Barcelona will pay the France international what he is owed over the next 18 months, freeing up enough wage budget to sign Torres.
“FC Barcelona and first-team player Samuel Umtiti have reached an agreement to extend the latter’s contract until 30 June 2026,” the club said in a statement.
“In the year and a half left on his contract, the French defender is reducing a portion of his salary.”
“FC Barcelona’s financial commitments to the player are not increased as a result of this contract extension.”
“FC Barcelona wishes to publicly express its gratitude to Samuel Umtiti for his willingness and affection for the club.
FC Barcelona will be able to increase its ‘financial fair play’ quota and thus register Ferran Torres with the Spanish Professional Football League thanks to this contract extension.”
Umtiti was linked with a move to Newcastle earlier this month, but it now appears that he will remain in Xavi’s first team alongside Torres.
The Spaniard could now make his debut in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals against Real Madrid on Wednesday.
This week’s mini-tournament is being held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital, with Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao also competing.
In the meantime, Barcelona is said to have made an offer for Wolves winger Adama Traore, with Tottenham also interested.
According to Sport, Barcelona intends to leapfrog Spurs by making a tempting player-exchange offer for Traore, who spent some of his youth career at the Nou Camp.
If Ousmane Dembele refuses to sign a new contract, the Catalan club will make an unbelievable offer to the Midlands side.
Dembele, a £130 million signing for Barcelona, is no longer with the club.
