In direct violation of strict level 4 coronavirus regulations, Tottenham have made their disapproval known to three of their players for attending a party over the Christmas season.
Erik Lamela, Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilón – along with Manuel Lanzini of West Ham – are seen at the party in a photo that circulated on social media. In the photo, which is believed to have been taken on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, there are 15 adults.
West Ham are extremely disappointed with Lanzini, who came on as a replacement for Everton’s 1-0 victory on Friday. Since the picture was taken, they say the midfielder has tested negative for Covid.
For Saturday’s game against Leeds, Lamela was not in Spurs’ squad, while Reguilón was among the substitutes.
With a hamstring problem, Lo Celso is down.
A Spurs spokesman said, “We are extremely disappointed and strongly condemn this picture showing some of our players at Christmas with family and friends, particularly as we know the sacrifices made over the holidays by everyone across the country to be safe.”
The rules are straightforward, there are no exceptions, and all our players and staff are constantly reminded of the current guidelines and their duty to comply with them and set an example. The matter will be handled internally.
West Ham said, “With its protocols and actions in relation to Covid-19, the club has set the highest standards possible, so we are disappointed to learn of the actions of Manuel Lanzini.” The matter was treated internally and Manuel was clearly reminded of his duties.
Lanzini apologised for a “bad error over Christmas” on Twitter, adding: “I take full responsibility for my actions.”
I know that individuals have made difficult sacrifices in order to be healthy and I can set a better example.
As there were several accidents during the first lockdown in the spring, this is not the first time Spurs players have violated the lockdown rules. José Mourinho was seen having a personal training session with Tanguy Ndombele, while Ryan Sessegnon and Davinson Sánchez were seen running together.
Serge Aurier was a repeat offender of Moussa Sissoko and had a shave and a personal training session.
