Aston Villa’s Grealish likes tweet questioning his exclusion from Gareth Southgate’s England squad

Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish liked a tweet that questioned why he was not called up for the England squad.

Grealish, who has since unliked the tweet, was on the fringes of making it into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming matches Iceland and Denmark in the Nations League.

However, the 24-year-old was not called up as Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips earned his first Three Lions nod after helping his side win the Championship.

The tweet from SkyBet said: ‘Last year Southgate said that Jack Grealish must gain more Premier League experience to earn a call-up’

It then detailed Grealish’s stats in the last Premier League season, where he got eight goals, six assists and won nine man of the match awards.

They then compared Grealish’s Premier League accomplishments with Kalvin Phillips, who is yet to feature in a topflight match in his career.

Grealish played a huge part on Villa’s last day survival in the Premier League, as he scored an 84th minute goal against West Ham that was cancelled out just a minute later, but proved to be the difference as Bournemouth and Watford occupied the final two relegation spots.

Phillips told Sky Sports that he had received a phone call from Southgate as he agent rang him on the way to training to tell him about the call-up.

He said: ‘I am over the moon. It is massive news for me, the club and my family. I am grateful for the opportunity.

‘My agent rang me and said Southgate had been in touch and he wanted to speak to me. He rang me on my way to training and I was very nervous.

‘I didn’t know what to say really, he mentioned that he had been tracking me for a while.

‘I don’t think I expected to get into the England squad this early in the season, maybe I got lucky I don’t know.

Some fans took to Twitter as opinion appeared to be divided among the Three Lions fanbase.

One supporter believed Grealish’s exclusion from the squad was down to his antics earlier in the UK’s lockdown enforced by coronavirus.

Grealish had attended a party at a friend’s house earlier in the year and crashed his car and was charged with two driving offences, as the fan explained Southgate is looking to call-up role models, of which Grealish apparently does not fit.

Another fan believed the attacker being left out the squad has nothing to do with Kalvin Phillips being called up over him, but insinuated that Southgate has an issue with Grealish.

He wrote: ‘It’s not even about Philipps as he is a good player. It’s about the clear issue that Southgate has with Grealish.’
