Aston Villa ‘targeting shock move for Atletico Madrid and England defender Kieran Trippier’

Aston Villa want to sign Atletico Madrid and England full-back Kieran Trippier this summer, according to reports.

The 29-year-old joined the LaLiga side last summer and has been a key part of Diego Simeone’s defence on the right-hand side.

Villa boss Dean Smith is looking to improve his defence after his side shipped 67 goals in the top-flight last term, the second-highest total in the league.

And according to the Telegraph, Smith is looking to bring Trippier to Villa Park either on a loan or permanent deal this summer to challenge Frederic Guilbert and Ahmed Elmohamady for a starting spot.

The England international played 33 matches in all competitions for Simeone’s side last season, with his debut campaign in Spain plagued early on with a groin injury.

He recovered from the setback to guide Atletico to a third-placed finish in the Spanish top-flight and also played in the club’s Champions League quarter-final loss to RB Leipzig.

Trippier moved to Spain from Tottenham Hotspur, with his last match for the north Londoners being the Champions League final loss to Liverpool in June 2019.

Overall, the right back made 114 appearances for Tottenham between 2015 and 2019, but he failed to win a trophy in north London.

He began his career at Manchester City, but never went on to make a senior appearance at the Etihad Stadium before moving to Burnley in 2011.

His performances at Turf Moor earned him a £3.5million move to Spurs while he has also been capped 19 times by England.

Trippier was a key member of the England squad that reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2018. The right back scored a delightful free-kick in the last four to give England the lead against Croatia.

He was ranked as the most creative player in the Russia tournament, creating 24 attacking opportunities in the entire competition.
